Why calculate hourly cost?

A total annual expense figure is not enough on its own: a machine that works more will naturally consume more fuel and maintenance. For a fair comparison, divide cost by working hours. How to read the result

Total hourly cost shows direct expenses per hour while the machine is working. It is the baseline reference when preparing a rental quote or project unit rate, but it is not sufficient on its own.

Effective hourly cost with downtime spreads the same annual expense over fewer productive hours. If a large share of planned working time is lost to breakdowns, waiting for parts or weather, this figure rises noticeably.

The share of each item varies by machine type and age. On a young machine depreciation and insurance weigh more; on an older machine maintenance and fuel dominate. The breakdown bar shows which item deserves attention.

Frequently asked questions

How is depreciation calculated?

Purchase price minus salvage value is divided by economic life hours. This shows capital cost per hour; your accounting depreciation method may differ.

Is fuel included in maintenance cost?

No. Fuel is kept as a separate operating expense. It is added as its own line in the hourly total; for rent comparisons both should be read together.

Why does downtime increase cost?

Expenses such as depreciation, insurance and annual maintenance continue during downtime. When productive hours fall, the same annual expense is divided by fewer hours and the hourly rate rises. Fuel and operator are not included in this increase; no fuel is consumed during downtime.
